Fly Fishing In New York

New York state has fantastic opportunities for fly fishing due to countless streams, lakes and rivers.  Many of these streams support wild populations of Trout and whose meat is extremely delicious. Some of the best Trout fishing can be found in the Catskill Mountains and Hudson Valley. This is the place where fly fishing in America was born.

What type of fish?

Brook  Trout

They are New York State’s official state fish and they prefer living in cool water so small lakes or moderate streams, ponds are home to them. 

Brown Trout

Brown Trout can tolerate higher water temperatures than Brook Trout. They can be found in streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. 

Rainbow Trout

Around 400,000 Rainbow Trout are stocked each spring into streams and lakes.


 Places to go fly fishing in New York

Prospect Park and Central Park

Flies are streamers, nymphs and you can catch Largemouth Bass, Pumpkinseed, Bluegill.

Ramapo River Southern New York State

You will need some waders and boots before having a fly fishing trip here. It is only one hour for driving from New York City and trout fishing is waiting for you to catch them. Using flies like streamers, nymphs or dry flies. Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Brook Trout are popular caught.

The Beaverkill and Willowemoc Rivers

The birthplace of American fly fishing is a place all started. Many passionate anglers from all countries fish these waters. This is about 2,5 hours drive from New York city. Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout will be hooked by anglers with help from streamers, nymphs or dry flies.

Neversink River

It is found in New York’s southeastern region and can not be missed when you go for a fly fishing trip. You can find wild Brown Trout and wild Brook Trout.

Upper Delaware River

The water runs cold and there are a massive amount of insects, which means perfect conditions for Trout. This river has been a popular spot for fly fishing. Fabulous quality of Trout is here, however, there are some sections that are private. Just be sure that you are aware of the land you are on and that it is okay for you to be there. Only 2,5 hours from New York city and you will see Rainbow has 16 – inch size and they are wild.

Ausable River, West Branch

West Branch is an ideal place to fish for Trout starting in about mid- May all the way through until mid October, but take note that these are catch and release areas only. It is also a great natural beauty because the river is located within the Adirondack Mountains.


Best time to Fly fish in New York

April, May and June are some of the most productive months for fly fishing. Largemouth, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Musky, Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout are targeted species.

Saltwater fly fishing is also popular out of New York city. If you plan on fishing in the Adirondacks, Catskills, from late May until fall is a nice time. Keep in mind that you wear clothing appropriately for the weather and you can choose fishing shirts from here. 

Regulations

You need to have a fishing license if you are over 16 years old. There are annual, 7 and one day licenses available for both residents and non – residents.  

Have to check the limit and size regulations.

If you go fishing in saltwater, you don’t need a license but you need more, polarized sunglasses, bug repellant, sunscreen and waders.
